Becky Roberts began her hi-fi journalism journey 12 years ago, when she was hired as a staff writer at What Hi-Fi? by none other than fellow Sound Advice expert Simon Lucas…

In those 12 years, I took on roles as News Editor, Hi-Fi Editor and Managing Editor. and spent three of them in Melbourne, where I also became the Editor of Australian Hi-Fi and Audio Esoterica magazines, navigating the different yet equally established market on the other side of the world. Upon my recent return to the UK, (obviously not for the climate) I wanted to start writing as soon as I could - and here I am.

What began as a fortunate foot in the technology journalism door in 2013, a ‘Home Cinema for Dummies’ book slapped down on my desk within an hour of crossing the What Hi-Fi? towers’ threshold, soon blossomed into a genuine passion for all things hi-fi and AV, even if I’ve specialised in the former category in recent years, and somewhat specialised further still in the head-fi space. Because can you really beat the isolated, intimate experience of listening to music through headphones (and, of course, a good headphone amp)? In my mind, that's a rhetorical question.

Naturally, my speaker-fronted hi-fi system provides some relief from being unsocially tethered to my desktop. At its helm is an invaluable pair of Wilson Benesch speakers passed down from my late dad, and though my record collection keeps steadily growing, I shamelessly admit to having been won over by network streaming, my Tidal subscription very much a survival essential.
